Follow the Leader

The saying, "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" (p.477) is referring to the inability or the inefficiency of trying to lead someone to a place or through an experience you have never had personally. The best teacher is experience. As a health and wellness professional it is virtually useless to point someone down a path that I have never gone myself. For instance, if I am obese and out of shape how can I possibly expect to be successful as a personal fitness trainer. I must practice what I preach! It is my direct obligation to my clients to be developed or at least developing in my own health psychologically, physically, and spiritually. As I have stated I must practice what I preach in order to have someone follow me. The blind can lead the blind but they will both fall into a ditch (Holy Bible, KJV). I can show someelse the way to implement psychological and spiritual growth in their lives by first implementing these practices of mental training and meditation opening up my personal life. Follow the Leader!

There is a practice this week called, "Meeting Aesclepius" that I participated in. The experience was quite interesting! The visualization practice was not something I was prepared for. It seemed much like the cartoon my kids watch called "Avatar: The Last Air Bender." I don't know in my spirituality if that is something that I should do.

  1. You gave enough examples to get your point across. This is surely a statement that majority can agree, has been raised and can live on. Knowledge and experience is what supports the life we live in. This is why so many people entrust in teachers, doctors, preachers, etc

In a good way I think its so funny you connected the exercise with Avatar the Air Bender. I don't even know what to suggest. Is this a part of your distraction that you should try to improve on? Or maybe you are one who just has a vivid imagination? Nevertheless I still hope your enjoy the experience. Good Luck Leader!

  2. Thanks for the great examples. I particularly like the "The blind can lead the blind but they will both fall into a ditch" saying, it is very true. I also can relate to what you are saying about personal training. It is a slippery slope. I work along side quite a few dietitians that are obese and have developed type 2 diabetes because of it. Compliance is often lower for their clientele.

  3. I also loved the saying "the blind can lead the blind but they will both fall into a ditch" hilarious! I have remember that one and use it one day. As a nurse, I feel obligated to be the best example for my patients. I don't smoke, I try to maintain my body as best as I can, and I am constantly working on my spirituality (amongst many other things). I do feel a sense of responsibility for caring for myself as I would expect my patients to do for themselves.
